Plan of the post of Panzacola, of San Miguel, and of San Bernardo with their environs

The enclosure and its explanation.

A. Enclosure, or stockade of the post, made of stakes of cypress and pine, worked and joined together, and about 9 feet in height over the level of the ground. They are rotted at the base.

B. Wooden stronghouses of two stories. They are in good condition, minus some pieces of wood on the bottom that are rotten. In front they have a ditch that is shallow and narrow.

C. Gates.

D. Guard house that now serves as warehouse of provisions.

E. The church, previously warehouse of provisions.

F. House of government, and treasury.

G. Old battery.

H. Pavilions of the officers in middling condition, and the balconies that it has all around it are entirely rotted.

I. Its kitchens, in bad condition.

K. Barracks of the troop, also with its balconies rotted.

L. Its kitchen, unusable.

M. The ditches in front of the stronghouses.

N. Warehouses of provisions, in good condition.

O. Powder magazine of masonry, useless.

P. House of the chaplain.

Q. Hospital, abandoned.

R. Pilings commonly in the water, which is ruined.

Observation about the Fort of San Bernardo.

S. The Fort of San Bernardo is distant from Pensacola 720 toises, and from San Miguel 320. Its elevation above the level of Panzacola is 96 feet; its difference above San Miguel is 18 feet.

This fort of San Bernardo, although it is a little more elevated than that of San Miguel, has the defect of being very far from Panzacola, and it cannot be defended or protected in any way, and in addition it is very small for the number of troops that are necessary for the service of its artillery.

T. The Fort of San Miguel, distance from Panzacola, and its elevation above the level of this villa is 78 feet. It has the advantage, by being closer, although it is of less elevation than San Bernardo, but nevertheless it seems to me much better to take advantage of it by constructing or rebuilding this fort of San Miguel with masonry, taking advantage of its ditches and covered way, and from its advance guard make barracks and houses for the troops, and the rest employed in the service of the King.

V. El Sombrero, is entirely useless, and although it would be good, it is impossible to maintain so many fortifications with so few troops, and in consequence it is necessary to raze it with the goal that nothing is visible.
