Southeastern Indian Tribes in the Present Day

Back to Main Indigenous Groups Page

The list below provides the names (and websites links, if available) of present-day tribes that have been recognized officially by either the United States federal government, or by state governments in the greater Southeast. Many other groups exist which have not received either federal or state recognition, some of which have applied and are still being considered, others of which have previously applied but been rejected, and others of which have not applied or have no intention to apply for recognition. This list may well be incomplete (especially as websites come and go), and will likely change over time, so please contact me with any updates. Given the unclear and sometimes controversial status of the numerous tribal groups and other organizations that are not recognized by either federal or state governments, I am limiting this list to those that are formally recognized. This is not to suggest that other groups are not "legitimate" (since "legitimacy" is not necessarily something that can or should be decided by any governmental or other outside group), but simply to keep this list manageable.
