Introduction to the profession, scope of practice, state/federal laws and regulations, code of ethics, and career opportunities. Classroom instruction and field trips to introduce students to the fields of hematology, clinical chemistry, diagnostic microbiology, immunohematology, serology, and blood banking

MLS 3948     Service Learning Field Study II . . . . . 1-3(F,S,SS)
Placement in community agency or other social organizational setting related to field of study. Supervision by faculty and agency. Students and faculty “customize” courses to fit a full range of services that are available in the setting. Student must be able to draw correlation between the discipline and field study. Journal and reflective experience paper are required. With the agreement of the student’s faculty sponsor, a minimum of 4-6 hours per week must be done at the field site per semester hour of credit. MLS 4220     Urinalysis/Body Fluids I . . . . . 2(F)
Corequisite: MLS 4220L
Collection, transport and processing of urine and other body fluid specimens. Analysis of physical properties and chemical examination. Microscopic examination for normal and abnormal cellular elements and crystals. Correlation of lab findings to various disease conditions. Manual and automated methods for blood cell counts and hemoglobin measurements. Production, maturation and morphology of normal and abnormal human blood cells. Pathological alterations in peripheral blood and bone marrow morphology in primary and secondary hematological disorders. Purpose, principle and clinical value of all the routine and special procedures in a modern hematology lab. Material and supply fee will be assessed for corresponding lab. Permission is required

Role of blood vessels, platelets and coagulation factors in normal hemostasis. Morphology and function of platelets; diseases of platelets and tests for platelet function. Study of coagulation pathways and fibrinolytic mechanisms. Study of normal and pathologic coagulation inhibitors; inherited and acquired coagulation disorders. Lab diagnosis and management of hemorrhagic diseases, hypercoagulability and anticoagulant therapy. Material and supply fee will be assessed for corresponding lab. Permission is required

Corequisite: MLS 4460L
Study of bacteria associated with infectious diseases. Includes microbial taxonomy, physiology, genetics and host-parasite relationships as they apply to clinical microbiology. Pathogens of particular organ systems, pathogenesis of infectious disease, clinical manifestations, etiology and epidemiology of disease are covered. Interpretation of test results and clinical relevance are taught utilizing case studies. Permission

Methods for specimen collection, handling and processing of human tissues and body fluids for isolation and identification of bacteria. Conventional and rapid identification methods for clinically significant bacteria, principles of automation, susceptibility testing, infection control, and quality assurance procedures are included. Diagnostic methods for diseases that show a specific immune response by developing an antibody(ies) to the invading organism. In vitro antigen-antibody reactions to detect, confirm and manage the treatment of diseases such as syphilis, viral hepatitis, rubella, infectious mononucleosis, lupus and several other bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic infections. The infectious agent, nature of the disease, types of antibodies produced and techniques to detect and quantitate are discussed. Material and supply fee will be assessed for corresponding lab. Fundamentals of blood group immunology, pre-transfusion testing of a patient’s blood for compatibility with donor blood, detection and identification of allo and autoantibodies, transfusion therapy and hazards of transfusion, investigation of transfusion reactions, collection and processing of donor blood, component preparation and uses in transfusion therapy. Introduction to the basic principles and procedures of clinical chemistry. Lecture and lab devoted to chemical analysis of blood and other body fluids. Specimen collection, lab mathematics, basic lab instrumentation, metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids and related disorders, evaluation of kidney function, electrolytes, blood gases, acid-base balance and disorders, mineral metabolism and methodology. Continuation of Clinical Chemistry I. Theory and practice of laboratory procedures to diagnose disorders related to proteins and amino acids, bilirubin metabolism and liver function, pancreatic function, serum enzymes, vitamins and trace elements, endocrine function, toxicology and therapeutic drug monitoring. New and emerging technologies in molecular biology, tumor markers and molecular genetics are discussed. Methods in quality control, quality assurance, proficiency testing, and laboratory safety are covered. Material and supply fee will be assessed for corresponding lab. Permission is required

Continuation of Hematology I. Advanced practical training in automated hematology instrumentation, routine and special procedures in hematology lab, and practice of quality control methods, maintenance and trouble shooting of clinical hematology equipment. Training includes all aspects of clinical lab medicine in a modern hematology/coagulation lab and prepares the student to assume responsibility as a medical technologist. Permission is required

Continuation of Immunohematology I, at one of the affiliate hospitals. Advanced practical training in modern blood banking and transfusion services at the hospital. Training includes practice and performance, under supervision, of all the procedures involving pre-transfusion tests on patient’s blood, selection of donor blood, compatibility determination, problem solving, release of suitable blood/blood components for transfusion therapy. Developments in biomedical technology including stem cells, new and emerging pathogens, advances in cardiac and cancer diagnosis, screening for fetal defects, drug testing, transfusion medicine, osteoporosis and cystic fibrosis screening. Current topics in screening, diagnosis and management of disease by laboratory methods. One course in chemistry and one course in biological sciences required prior to taking this course
