Special topics in modern physics: quantum mechanics, atomic structure, molecular structure, atomic and molecular spectra, physics of solids, and band structure, nuclear structure, nuclear forces, radioactive decay and nuclear reactions, elementary particles, and fundamental interactions. PHY 3220 Intermediate Mechanics . . . . . 4(CALL DEPT)
Prerequisite: PHY 2048 or PHY 2053.
Corequisite: MAP 2302.
Particle mechanics in 1, 2 and 3 dimensions for various forces. Central forces and celestial mechanics. Systems of many particles. Rigid body dynamics. Introduction to Lagrangian methods.

Geometrical, physical, and modern optics. Polarization, interference, diffraction, holography, and optical fibers. Material and supply fee will be assessed.

Prerequisite: PHY 2049 or PHY 2054.
Corequisite: MAC 2311, PHY 3722L.
Direct and alternating current circuits. Transient analysis. Use of semiconductor diodes and transistors in circuits. Analysis of amplifier states and operational amplifiers. Principles of feedback.

Prerequisite: PHY 3220 or EGM 3512; MAS 4156 or PHZ 4113.
Electrostatics, Gauss's Theorem, magnetic fields, Biot-Savart Law, electromagnetic induction, introduction to Maxwell's Equations, and electromagnetic waves.

PHY 4325 Electricity and Magnetism II . . . . . 3(F)
Prerequisite: PHY 4323.
Maxwell's equations and electromagnetic waves in vacuum and in a medium, radiation from dipoles and antennas, transmission lines, wave guides, relativistic electrodynamics, Lienard-Weichert Potentials.

PHY 4445 Lasers and Applications . . . . . 3(S)
Prerequisite: PHY 2054 or PHY 2049.
Introduction to lasers and applications covering topics on nature of light, photons, elements of semiconductor physics, modulation of light, displays, laser principles, types of lasers and their design, photodetectors, fiber optics, optical communications.

PHY 4513 Thermodynamics and Kinetic Theory . . . . . 3(S)
Prerequisites: MAC 2313 and PHY 2048.
Laws of thermodynamics, thermodynamic potentials, kinetic theory of gases, Maxwell-Boltzman distribution, introduction to Bose Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics. Material and supply fee will be assessed.

Prerequisite: PHY 4323 and PHZ 4113.
Postulates of quantum theory, Schrodinger equation, particle in a box, harmonic oscillator; hydrogen atom, and perturbation theory. Material and supply fee will be assessed.
