LAE - Language Arts in English Education

LAE 3314 Language Skills and Literature in the Elementary School . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Prerequisite: EDE 4200.
Development of pre-service teacher skills and understandings needed for conducting a language arts program at the elementary school level (this course or its equivalent is a prerequisite for RED 3310). Admission to Teacher Education and permission is required.

LAE 3324 Teaching Language Arts in the Middle School . . . . . 2(F)
Corequisite: EDM 4943.
Theory/methodology for teaching language arts/literature at the middle school level; emphasis on teaching strategies for integrating classroom listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities; includes observation/participation in middle school settings. Admission to Teacher Education and permission is required.

LAE 4335 Special Methods in English . . . . . 3(F)
Practical application of theory and methodology to teaching English in secondary schools. Involves 5-week classroom practicum, unit planning and curriculum building.

LAE 4464 Young Adult Literature . . . . . 3(S)
Modern works of literature that have demonstrated appeal for adolescents and works written specifically for the age range of 12 to 20 years. The works will be considered in the context of young adult needs: psychological, social and ethical. Designed primarily for education majors.

LAE 4510 Diagnostic/Prescriptive Instruction in the Language Arts . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Prerequisite: LAE 3314 and RED 3310.
Corequisite: EDE 3942, EDM 3942 or EEC 3942.
Methods of informal assessment; procedures and techniques for individualizing instruction in the language arts (speaking, listening, reading and written composition); includes observation/participation in school settings. Admission to Teacher Education is required.

LAE 5368 Special Methods of Teaching English . . . . . 4(F)
Prerequisite: EDF 3214, EDF 3604, and ESE 3321C.
Practical application of theory and methodology to teaching English in the secondary schools. Involves six week classroom practicum, a twelve week Writing Lab practicum, unit planning that takes into account the Sunshine State Standards, curriculum building, a teaching presentation, and a research project related to the teaching and integrating of the language arts. Permission is required. Material and supply fee will be assessed.

LAE 6325 Language Arts Instruction in Middle and Secondary School Settings . . . . . 3(S)
Prerequisite: LAE 3324.
Corequisite: EDM 6944 or ESE 6944.
Significant trends in middle and secondary language arts instruction, including grammar, process writing, writing across the curriculum, response to young adult literature and the diagnosis of reading problems. Admission to Teacher Education and permission is required.

LAE 6352 Language Arts Instruction in Elementary School Settings . . . . . 3(F)
Prerequisite: LAE 3314.
Significant trends in elementary and middle school language arts instruction, including process writing, writing across the curriculum, and response to children's and early adolescent literature.
