ENC - English: Composition

ENC 1101 English Composition I . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Basic principles of English composition including grammar and mechanics, usage, paragraph unity, coherence and design, and the modes of discourse: narration, description, exposition and argumentation. May include additional work in the Writing Laboratory. (Gordon Rule Course: Writing) and (General Studies Course: COM/C1) Material and supply fee will be assessed.

ENC 1101L English Composition I Lab . . . . . 1(F,S)
Lab to accompany ENC 1101. (Gordon Rule Course: Writing) Material and supply fee will be assessed.

ENC 1102 English Composition II . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Prerequisite: ENC 1101.
Continuation of ENC 1101, with emphasis on complexities of style and rhetorical strategies. Documented paper is included. May include additional work in the Writing Laboratory. (Gordon Rule Course: Writing) and (General Studies Course: COM/C2). Material and supply fee will be assessed.

ENC 3XXX Advanced Composition . . . . . 3(F,S)
Prerequisite: ENC 1101, ENC 1102.
Introduction to the techniques and types of professional writing, including correspondence and reports most often found in business and technical communities. (Gordon Rule Course: Writing)

ENC 3240 Technical Writing . . . . . 3(F,S)
Practice in writing technical descriptions, proposals and reports. Designed for Computer Science majors taking CEN 3031. (Gordon Rule Course: Writing) Material and supply fee will be assessed.

ENC 3250 Professional Writing . . . . . 3(F,S)
Prerequisite: Grade of "C" in both ENC 1101 and ENC 1102.
Professional writing course relevant in business, industry, government, and other institutional settings; major elements of written organizational communication with emphasis on composition of letters, memos, proposals, etc. (Gordon Rule Course: Writing) Material and supply fee will be assessed.

ENC 3254 Writing in the Counseling Professions . . . . . 3(CALL DEPT)
Practice in precise, descriptive, and accurate writing techniques for practitioners in social work, psychology and other helping professions. (Gordon Rule Course: Writing)

ENC 3310 Advanced Critical Writing . . . . . 3(F,S)
Prerequisite: ENC 1101, ENC 1102.
Development of writing skills particular to the study of literature and literary criticism. English majors and minors only. Material and supply fee will be assessed. Permission is required. (Gordon Rule Course: Writing).

ENC 3342 Magazine Editing and Production . . . . . 3(CALL DEPT)
Workshop in the principles and practice of editing poetry/fiction manuscripts for publication in The Panhandler, a national literary magazine. Experience in computer layout (desktop publishing). Students produce two issues of the magazine.

ENC 3949 Cooperative Education . . . . . 1-2(F,S,SS)
Alternating full-time or consecutive parallel terms of practical experience in the intended field. Reinforcing academic preparation; confirming educational and career goals; personal and professional development; early start in career; earnings toward self-support; improved employability. (See program description under Cooperative Education). Graded on satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis only. Permission of director of Cooperative Education is required.
