Basic fundamentals of music theory, including meter and rhythm, tonic, dominant and sub dominant harmony, cadences, major and minor tonality, and inverted triads. Required of all students majoring in music; non- music majors must have departmental permission. Corequisite: MUT 1271.

Continuation of MUT 1111, including non-harmonic tones, secondary triads, principles of chord progressions, use of harmonic sequence, primary seventh chords and secondary dominants. Prerequisite: MUT 1111/MUT 1271. Corequisite: MUT 1272.

Linear writing through species counterpoint and comparison with 16th and 18th century musical idioms. Two years of music theory required.

Systematic analysis of 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th century music, with emphasis upon structural designs and stylistic trends. Two years of music theory required.

MUT 4XXX Advanced Jazz Arranging . . . . . 2(F)
Continuation and final course in jazz arranging sequence as a study of techniques and practices of successful jazz arrangers and composers. Students complete a major jazz composition. Prerequisite: MUT 44XX (Jazz Arranging II).

MUT 4311 Instrumentation . . . . . 2(F)
Use of, and writing for, orchestral and band instruments; characteristics and capabilities of each. Instruments studied individually, small groups and as members of full ensemble. Two years of college theory required. Material and supply fee will be assessed.

MUT 44XX Jazz Arranging II . . . . . 2(S)
A continuation of Jazz Arranging I, emphasizes jazz composition and analysis through synthesis of major jazz composers. Coursework emphasizes composition and arranging for the large ensemble. Prerequisite: MUT 3XXX (Jazz Arranging I).
