MAN - Management

MAN 2948 Service Learning Field Study I . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Placement in community agency or other social organizational setting related to field of study. Supervision by faculty and agency. Students and faculty "customize" courses to fit a full range of services that are available in the setting. Student must be able to draw correlation between the discipline and field study. Journal and reflective experience paper are required. With the agreement of the student's faculty sponsor, a minimum of 4-6 hours per week must be done at the field site per semester hour of credit. Permission of instructor is required.

MAN 3025 Management Fundamentals . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Study of principles of management. Process and content of management analyzed. Emphasizes classical, human relations, human resources, behavioral and quantitative management methods. Content includes: planning, organizing, leading, control, employment cycle, organization design, and motivation. 45 semester hours of course work is required prior to this course.

MAN 3240 Organizational Behavior . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Understanding human processes in formal organizations, utilizing individual and group exercises which simulate behavioral dynamics of organizations. Content areas include conflict resolution, communication, leadership, planning and control and other organizational processes. May not be taken for credit by students having credit for SOP 3662. MAN 3025 or equivalent is suggested but not required.

MAN 3301 Human Resources Management . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Introduction to personnel administration: emphasis on the basic personnel function of both the personnel specialist and the operating manager. Critical issues stressed include: selection, compensation, OSHA, EEO, unions and discipline. Prerequisite: MAN 3025 or equivalent.

MAN 3360 Industrial Psychology . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Application of psychological principles to problems of employee selection, placement, merit rating, job analysis, management training and other factors related to productivity. May not be taken for credit by students having credit for INP 3004.

MAN 3504 Operations Management . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Application of quantitative and qualitative management techniques to manufacturing and service organizations. Coverage of behavioral and cultural differences in international and domestic operations, plant location and layout, production method selection, job design, scheduling and control of operations and related topics. Statistics required prior to taking this course. Prerequisite: MAN 3025.

MAN 3540 Introduction to Management Science . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Quantitative decision-making methods and their application to planning and control of operations. Systems concept of organization and mathematical reasoning in decision-making emphasized. Cases and incidents provide illustrations. Prerequisite: MAN 3025, MAC 2233.

MAN 4102 Management of Diversity . . . . . 3(S)
Roles, behaviors, career paths, motivational strategies, obstacles, and collegial reaction to managing diversity within the labor force are an integral aspect of the course. Personal assessment of communication styles and diversity in management styles are provided. Discussions focus on diversity awareness and strategies to enhance productivity through team effort. Emphasis on proactive steps to integrate a diverse work force toward a more productive unit. Offered concurrently with MAN 5105; graduate students will be assigned additional work.

History of labor organization, management policy toward unions and the collective bargaining process. Legal environment reviewed.

MAN 4510 Profitability and Productivity Analysis . . . . . 3(CALL DEPT)
Formulation and application of analytical techniques to reach cost effective solutions to business, government and engineering problems. Time-based analysis of selection, replacement, and lease-or-buy decisions including multiple alternatives, uncertainty and sensitivity analysis. Problem solving approach utilized. May not be taken for credit by students having credit for EGS 3613. Senior standing is required.

MAN 4720 Policy Analysis and Formulation . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Aggregate planning and development of overall policy for organizations. Emphasizes the system interrelationship of the functional areas of enterprise from the viewpoint of top executives. Senior status is required. Prerequisite: FIN 3403, MAN 3504, MAR 3023.

MAN 4750 The Future: Projecting, Planning and Managing . . . . . 3(F,S)
Roles that individuals and organizations have in managing the future. Senior status and in a business major is required.

MAN 4940 Internship in Management . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
On an "as available" basis, management majors may request an internship in management by submitting written proposals to faculty advisors. Proposals must be approved by advisor, chairperson and sponsor. Students must have a 2.5 GPA overall and a 3.0 GPA in management to be eligible for internships. All internships include seminar on internship experience, including written reports. Graded satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis only. Permission is required.

Study and critical analysis of organization theory as it is constituted presently and can be applied to all types of organizations, public and private. Consideration given to interrelationships among the individual, groups, organizations, and larger systems. May not be taken for credit by students having credit for PAD 5107 or SOP 5617.

MAN 5237 Applied Business Dynamics . . . . . 3(CALL DEPT)
Business organizations through simulation, lecture, discussion and readings. Systems theory, organization design and theory, organization relationships and work world vocabulary are focal learning areas. May not be taken for credit by majors in the College of Business. Prerequisite: MAN 5542 or MAN 6156/INP 6397.

MAN 5537 Management of Engineering and Technology . . . . . 3(CALL DEPT)
Management of engineering and technology activities and organizations. Topics include management principles applied to technology, technical project planning and execution, technical personnel management and external relationships.

MAN 5542 Team Building . . . . . 3(S)
Teaches team building concepts experientially. Each student will be expected to demonstrate a theoretical understanding of group dynamics, be able to apply this knowledge within a task group and function as a group facilitator.

MAN 5806C Small Business Management Consulting . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Practicum in providing management assistance to small businesses in area. Usually students work in pairs and provide assistance to two business firms. Weekly meetings, teaching in consultancy and final written report on each firm constitute principal elements. Senior or graduate standing, 3.0 GPA and permission of the instructor is required.

MAN 6156 Management and Organizational Behavior . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Appreciation and understanding of the field of organizational behavior and its application in managing human and other resources. Emphasizes understanding individual behavior (motivation, self-awareness, leadership, etc.) and group dynamics (decision-making, group development and work) plus conflict, climate, learning styles, power, stress, process/content, human rights and quality. Utilizes experiential learning methodologies and other appropriate designs. May not be taken for credit by students having credit for INP 6397. Permission of instructor is required.

MAN 6285 Organizational Change and Development . . . . . 3(F)
Organizational development: change agentry, role of self in O.D., change theory, feedback methodology, relationship building, team building and quality. Lab learning methodology. Expanded emphasis on field work and application can follow as MAN 6943. May not be taken for credit by students having credit for SOP 6668. Prerequisite: MAN 6156.

MAN 6288 Pro Seminar in Organizational Development . . . . . 3(S)
Ethics, values and assumptions of organizational development. Focuses on such core issues as ambiguity, time, trust, rejection, organic, marginality, authority, control and congruency. Taught as a seminar, it builds on the literature, research and experience of organizational development. Prerequisite: MAN 6285/SOP 6668 and Practicum.

MAN 6511 Operations Management Problems . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Planning and control of domestic and multinational service and manufacturing operations utilizing information inside and outside the organization. Techniques to plan and improve location, layout, flow through the facility, design of work, and management of the human factor; all with an emphasis on management and maintenance of quality. Contains a portfolio project. Prerequisite: QMB 6305.

MAN 6721 Strategic Management and Policy Formulation . . . . . 3(F,S)
Utilizes case analysis, a strategic simulation and other related experiential exercises. Integrates and applies the various business management functions from the strategic viewpoint of the organizational chief executive officer. Designed for M.B.A. candidates and should be taken the last semester before graduation. Permission of instructor is required. Prerequisite: FIN 6406, MAR 6815, ECP 6705.

MAN 6943 Management Internship . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
As internship opportunities become available, M.B.A. candidates may request internships in management by submitting written proposals to a management advisor. Proposals must be approved by advisor and M.B.A. chairperson. Students may receive maximum of 6 sh of credit for internships. All internships include a seminar on the internship experience, including formal written reports. Graded on a satisfactory/ unsatisfactory basis only. Special permission is required.
