EDM - Education: Middle School

EDM 2948 Service Learning Field Study I . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Placement in community agency or other social organizational setting related to field of study. Supervision by faculty and agency. Students and faculty "customize" courses to fit a full range of services that are available in the setting. Student must be able to draw correlation between the discipline and field study. Journal and reflective experience paper are required. With the agreement of the student's faculty sponsor, a minimum of 4-6 hours per week must be done at the field site per semester hour of credit. Permission of instructor is required.

EDM 3230 Middle School Organization and Curriculum . . . . . 2(S)
Examination of the organization and curriculum of contemporary middle school. Interdisciplinary teaming, cooperative learning techniques, advisory roles, testing and evaluations, and classroom management procedures will be discussed. Admitted to Teacher Education is required.

EDM 3322 Integrated Methods I . . . . . 3(S)
Teacher's role in delivering content specific curricula within the middle school will be the focus. Students will develop ability to construct lesson plans of various types that integrate specialized content across the middle level curriculum. Basic lesson plans for direct instruction, guided discovery, problem-centered learning, and class and individual projects will be developed. Planning for implementation of cooperative learning, alternative assessment, and verbal techniques that encourage student thinking will be addressed. Students will become familiar with content specific manipulatives, other instruction tools, and ways to organize and communicate information in written and oral modes. Development of the emerging professional at the technical level will be emphasized. Admitted to Teacher Education is required. Prerequisite: EDM 3230, Corequisite: EDM 3942.

EDM 3941 Practicum I: Middle School . . . . . 1(F,S)
Course and practicum provide a comprehensive knowledge base concerning instructional and behavioral management. Areas of emphasis include structuring the classroom for success, planning for instruction, managing materials and equipment, and managing student and group behavior in the classroom. Students will be provided with opportunities to observe and participate in middle school settings. Minimum of 35 contact hours includes seminar, observing, collaborating with middle school education professionals in the school contact, and individual project. Admitted to Teacher Education is required. Corequisite: EDM 4310.

EDM 3942 Instructional Technology Professional Practicum II . . . . . 3(F,S)
Experience includes integrating technology across the curriculum through planned seminars and carefully designed course assignments. Students will also work with individuals, small groups, large groups and/or total classes. Students will also continue work begun earlier on their program on their Teacher Development Portfolio which documents competencies for all Accomplished Practices. Minimum of 100 hours in an educational setting includes: seminar, observation, planning, teaching and individual projects. Admitted to Teacher Education is required. Prerequisite: EDM 3941.

Strategies for managing the classroom, instruction and evaluation as it relates to teaching the essential school competencies. Admitted to Teacher Education is required. Corequisite: EDM 3941.

EDM 4321 Senior Seminar: Teaching in the Middle School . . . . . 2(F,S)
Organization of knowledge, materials, and learning activities to achieve instructional effectiveness and sound classroom management techniques. The student teacher will develop materials in the middle school as a member of a planning team. Admitted to Teacher Education and permission of instructor is required. Prerequisite: EDF 3214, EDF 3604 and EDM 3230. Corequisite: EDG 4940.

EDM 4323 Integrated Methods II . . . . . 3(CALL DEPT)
Focuses on the teacher's role as a reflective practitioner within a constructivist middle school environment. Prospective teachers will develop their abilities to deliver lesson plans of various types that promote meaningful learning and integrate specialized content across the middle level curriculum. Lesson plans that provide for middle level students' learning through use of content specific manipulatives, other instructional tools, ways to organize and communicate information in written and oral modes will be implemented in peer teaching episodes. The use of cooperative learning strategies, alternative assessment, and verbal techniques that promote students' learning with understanding will be examined on both practical and theoretical levels. Through guided reflection activities, prospective teachers will analyze their effectiveness in learning outcomes for the middle level student. Development of the emerging professional at the practitioner level will be emphasized. Admitted to Teacher Education is required. Prerequisite: EDM 3322. Corequisite: EDM 4943.

EDM 4934 Professional Development Seminar . . . . . 1(F,S)
Primary purpose is to promote reflective thinking for student empowerment. Through ongoing professional seminars and engagement in a variety of professional workshops on education topics. Students will develop the ability to self evaluate and reflect on experience for personal and professional development. Students will explore a variety of topics critical to their development as empowered teachers. Graded on satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis only. Corequisite: Student Teaching.

Intended to integrate skills and concepts acquired throughout the program. Focus is on developing and implementing thematic based instruction together with developmentally appropriate practice and evaluation. Minimum of 100 hours in an Elementary/Middle School classroom setting; includes seminar, observation, planning, teaching and individual projects. Permission of instructor is required. Prerequisite: EDM 4943. Corequisite: Student Teaching.

EDM 6235 Integrated Curriculum . . . . . 3(F,SS)
Advanced curriculum course for graduate middle level education students. Format combines classroom instruction and student engagement focusing on integration of the content areas with a field based component in which the student applies learnings and conducts research. The emphases of instruction are integration of content, best practices in the content areas, accomplished practices in teaching, contextual learning, constructivism, cooperative learning, interdisciplinary instruction, mental habits, multiple intelligences, SCANS competencies, and authentic assessment. Admitted to Teacher Education is required. Prerequisite: EDM 6245. Corequisite: EDM 6912.

EDM 6245 Curriculum, Instruction and Organization: Middle Level Education . . . . . 3(F)
Examination of the curriculum, instruction and organization of contemporary middle level education. Special needs of the pre-adolescent student as a learner, curriculum organization. Interdisciplinary teaming, cooperative learning and advisory/ counseling strategies will be incorporated. Admitted to Teacher Education is required.

EDM 6405 School Involvement and Community Relations . . . . . 3(F,SS)
Investigate techniques and strategies for developing and implementing effective home, school, community involvement programs at the middle school level. Emphasis will be placed on materials and techniques for communicating effectively with families from a variety of cultural backgrounds and the implications for industrial, labor and community relations as they impact the middle school level. Corequisite: EDM 6911.

EDM 6410 Classroom Management for Middle Level Environments . . . . . 3(S)
Provides an in-depth understanding of the interactions among the social, emotional, and cognitive characteristics of the pre- and early adolescent and effective management of classroom instruction and behavior. Admitted to Teacher Education is required. Corequisite: EDM 6911.

EDM 6911 Action Research . . . . . 6(F,S,SS)
Student engages in disciplined inquiry to solve classroom problems. The inquiry process involves problem identification, a literature review, implementation of an action plan, interpretation of results, and preparation of a written report. Graded on a satisfactory/ unsatisfactory basis only. Permission of advisor and faculty of the action research is required.

EDM 6912 Research Practicum . . . . . 3(F,S,SS)
Identification of a problem in the area of Middle Level Education, review of pertinent literature and preparation of a proposal with all the necessary information, conduct of research in a professional manner, evaluation and written report of the results. Permission of instructor is required.

EDM 6935 Graduate Seminar: Middle Level Education 2(F,S)
Organization of knowledge, materials, and learning activities to achieve instructional effectiveness and sound classroom management techniques in middle school settings. Permission of instructor is required. Corequisite: EDG 5940.

EDM 6944 Graduate Practicum . . . . . 3(F,S)
Uses the community, workplace partners, and schools for integrated teaching and learning applications. Includes seminar, field based, and classroom practicum applications for teaching the discipline through contextual content projects and activities. Admitted to Teacher Education is required.

EDM 6971 Thesis . . . . . 6(F,S,SS)
Original contribution or comprehensive analysis of theory and practice in an area of significant educational interest. Study includes problem identification, review of literature, design, data collection, analysis, and reporting results. Graded on satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis only. Permission of the thesis director is required.
