The Division of Diversity Studies and Applied Research offers NCATE
accredited M.Ed. degrees in Educational Leadership with specializations in
Educational Leadership (certification), Curriculum and Instruction, and
Education and Training Management Subspecialty.
The department also offers the NCATE accredited Ed.S. degree with
specializations in Educational Leadership and Curriculum and Instruction.

MASTER'S DEGREE PROGRAMS, M.Ed.
|
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
In addition to general University minimum standards of admission to graduate
studies, students are required to provide a letter of intent including the name,
address, and phone number of three professional references. The completed
application will be reviewed by the department Graduate Admissions Committee.
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for a M.Ed. degree in educational leadership, a student must:

Be admitted to the program; |
B. |
Submit an approved degree plan which includes 33-36 semester hours; |
C. |
Have at least 15 semester hours of all course work at the 6000 level (the
remainder may be at the 5000 level except when specific waivers have been
obtained); |
D. |
A maximum of 6 semester hours of graduate level directed study may be
accepted; |
E. |
Complete degree requirements within five years from the date of admission;
and |
F. |
Be recommended for graduation by the Division of Administrative Studies. |
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Those who seek approved degree program certification in educational
leadership must:

Submit GRE scores at the time of application. |
B. |
Complete all degree requirements of the approved program; |
C. |
Hold or be eligible for the Florida teaching certificate or its equivalent
from another state; and |
D. |
Have successfully completed at least three years teaching experience in
elementary and/or secondary school. |
EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP CERTIFICATION SPECIALIZATION
The educational leadership certification program, approved by the Florida
Council on Educational Management, is designed for students who wish to prepare
for administrative and supervisory positions such as principal, assistant
principal, district supervisor, in-service director, curriculum developer, or
dean in public and private elementary and secondary schools.
The program emphasizes the knowledge prescribed in the eight domains of the
Florida Council on Educational Management Leadership core and seeks to prepare
students for the Florida Educational Leadership Exam (FELE). Students must
select an area of emphasis with 6 semester hours in that emphasis. Areas of
emphasis are: Primary Education, Middle School Education, Secondary School
Education, and Exceptional Student Education.

APPLIED EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP
This option to the Educational Leadership Program was a result of a request
made by local area school superintendents. The major purpose of this option is
to prepare potential leaders to lead at-risk populated schools. This is a
collaborative agreement stating that students who meet the admission criteria
are to be recruited by the participating school districts.

SCHOOL CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT
This program is designed for professionals serving as elementary, middle, and
secondary classroom teachers. Participants generally will be individuals holding
teaching credentials and having a bachelors degree in education. Emphasis is on
analyzing personal needs, improving instructional skills, managing the
classroom, designing curricula and instructional packages, formulating and
evaluating instructional strategies, and conducting research appropriate to
one's instructional role.

EDUCATION & TRAINING MANAGEMENT SUBSPECIALTY (ETMS)
The 36 semester hour program is designed for military officers and others
interested in working in training in the military, business, and industry. It is
offered through an interinstitutional agreement with George Mason University,
George Washington University, University of Memphis, Old Dominion University,
San Diego State University, and the University of Rhode Island. Interested
individuals should contact the Division of Administrative Studies or the
educational officer at their base for the competency areas and designated
courses offered through UWF. One of the following is required for graduation:
comprehensive exam, action research, project, or thesis. The ETMS programs are
offered by the Division of Administrative Studies.

Students from PreK-12, community colleges, business and industry, and the
military interested in the application of instructional technology for education
and training can select the Instructional Technology emphasis within the ETMS
program. The option emphasizes emerging technology applications such as
web-based instruction, multimedia design, and distance learning with a strong
focus on instructional systems design, planning, and change. Two focus areas,
technology leadership and technology integration, can be selected for individual
student area of emphasis. This specialization is housed in the Division of

ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT LEADERSHIP (ODL) CERTIFICATION
The Organizational Development Leadership (ODL) Certificate can be obtained
from the Management Department by including the management courses listed (MAN
5237, MAN 5542, MAN 6156, MAN 6285) plus the following six semester hours: MAN
6288 Pro-Sem in OD (3 sh) and MAN 6943 Management Internship (3 sh). The
addition of these six semester hours results in a 42 sh program.

SPECIALIST DEGREE PROGRAMS, Ed.S.
|
This program is designed primarily for professionals who hold positions of
leadership in education or who aspire to provide educational leadership. The
purpose of the program is to develop and enhance the functional capability of
educational leaders. The research component is practitioner-oriented with
emphasis on the utilization of research findings for decision making.
The degree is designed to meet the educational needs of regional place-bound,
full-time employed professionals who will be selected from a wide range of
educational backgrounds. These backgrounds include but are not limited to public
school personnel, community college and university personnel, social and health
related personnel, and military personnel. The Ed.S. Program will prepare
professionals in the community to assume administrative and leadership
positions.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet the minimum standards for admission to graduate studies.
Additional requirements are the following:

Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university. |

Meet any two of the following: |

Master's degree GPA of at least 3.25, |

In addition to the graduate UWF admission application that is submitted to
the Office of Admissions, students are required to submit an addendum to the
COPS Graduate Office. |
The completed application will be reviewed by the Graduate Program Admissions
Committee. Upon admission, the student will be assigned an advisor.

CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION SPECIALIZATION
Students will select an option within one of the two major areas. The
Curriculum and Diversity Studies specialization area is housed in the Division
of Diversity Studies and Applied Research. The Instructional Technology
Specialization is housed in the Division of Technology, Research, and
Development.
The options are as follows:

Curriculum and Diversity Studies |

1. |
Curriculum Studies Option: Students will complete a specialization that
focuses on the following areas: (1) critical, multicultural, and feminist
pedagogical practices; (2) social transformation and change; (3) social and
political issues in education; (4) reform and activist movements; and (5)
curriculum development and delivery strategies. |
|

Diversity Studies Option: Students will complete a specialization that
focuses on the following areas: (1) social, multicultural, and feminist
theories; (2) social issues of diverse groups (ethnic, race, class, gender,
sexual orientation, disabilities, and other marginalized groups); (3)
intercultural theories and practices; (4) politics of difference, and (5)
educational and social science research and evaluation methods.

Guidance and Counseling Option: This option is designed for students who
want to receive guidance and counseling certification while completing the
specialist degree. This option complies with the State of Florida guidance and
counseling certification requirements. |

General Studies Option: This option is designed for students who are
planning to complete an Ed.D. specialization in teacher education or science and
social sciences. Before applying to the program, students are required to meet

Performance Technology Option: This option emphasizes both theoretical and
applied perspectives for considering how individual and organizational
performance can be enhanced through the systematic use of innovative
instructional technologies, training, feedback systems, and incentive systems. |

Distance Learning Option: In this option, students will learn how to
design distance infrastructures, establish policy directives within
organizations, support student performance, develop instructional materials, and
implement a distributed system via two-way interactive video systems using the
world wide web and CD ROMS. |
