The Interdisciplinary Social Sciences program, leading to the B.A. degree, is
for students desiring broad exposure to the social sciences. A normal program
includes 30-36 sh of social science coursework. Several areas of emphasis are
available. Coursework for these specializations is drawn from anthropology,
economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, social work, and
sociology.
A Pre-Civil Service Specialization prepares students for civil service
employment. A Pre-Law Specialization prepares students for law school. Both
specializations emphasize political science.
Psychology is the primary discipline for the Pastoral Specialization which is
designed for those planning to enter a formal ministerial program or to become
otherwise involved in church activities. Emphasis is on preparation for
administrative and helping roles.
Students interested in obtaining certification to teach this subject area in
secondary education need to contact an advisor in this department and in Teacher
Education Student Services (Building 85, Room 113) to carefully plan the course
work to satisfy degree and some teacher certification requirements. A degree in
this major is required for participation in the approved teacher education
program and for other certification options.
