First of two courses designed to increase understanding and knowledge of the history and practical applications of church music in western civilization. Focus on the history, literature, and performance practice of church music from the end of the ancient world to the present day. Two years of Music Theory required prior to taking this course.

MUR 3106 Church Music II . . . . . 2(2,0,0)
Continuation of the Church Music sequence. Focus on the literature, practical applications in the church music ministry setting, organizational structure and their functions, hand bell and instrumental techniques in church music, administration at all levels of the music ministry from children's choirs to senior adults, staffing issues, the role of the organist/accompanist/choirmaster, and the study of traditional and contemporary literature of various denominations. Two years of music theory required prior to taking this course. Prerequisite: MUR 3105.

MUR 4940 Church Music Internship . . . . . 3(0,0,20)
Internship for students in Church Music specialization within the Music Performance track. Requires a semester long internship under the supervision of a faculty advisor and appropriate clergy at a church of the student's choice which must be approved by the department. The internship will provide practical experience within the structure of a strong music ministry in the region in order to equip the student for a career in Church Music. Special permission required. Prerequisite: MUR 3105 and MUR 3106.
