ZOO 2948 Service Learning Field Study I . . . . . 1-3(VARIABLE)
Placement in community agency or other social organizational setting related to field of study. Supervision by faculty and agency. Students and faculty "customize" courses to fit a full range of services that are available in the setting. Student must be able to draw correlation between the discipline and field study. Journal and reflective experience paper are required. With the agreement of the student's faculty sponsor, a minimum of 4-6 hours per week must be done at the field site per semester hour of credit.

Symbioses between animal species (including protistans) are discussed and described with respect to their life cycles, distribution, pathogenicity, evolution and ecology. Introduction to the marine environment and its diverse fauna. Coral reefs, estuaries, open oceans and other marine habitats are surveyed with emphases on environmental features, community structure and adaptations of resident species. Includes species having special commercial, aesthetic and ecological importance. This course is directed toward non-biology majors and it will not count as biology credit for biology majors.

Survey of the invertebrates, with emphasis on systematics, morphology, physiology and ecology. Labs include detailed study of types and exposure to diversity, using live and preserved specimens, and exposure to techniques used in zoological research. Emphasis is on local marine species. Structure and function of chordates, especially those in water such as fishes, whales and seals.
