Journal and reflective experience paper are required. With the agreement of the student's faculty sponsor, a minimum of 4-6 hours per week must be done at the field site per semester hour of credit.

Understand the concepts of organizations, institutions, and communities and the dynamics which characterize their essence; to become familiar with human service agencies as organizations and the elements common to them; to develop analytic skills to identify and assess the need for change within organizations, institutions, and communities; examine various types of models of organizations; to understand the interdependent relationship between organizations, institutions and communities within a "systems" framework; to examine the appropriate role of the social work practitioner in implementing change strategies in organizations, institutions, and communities; to understand the obstacles to planned change; understand organizational culture and its effect on human beings; and to understand how the dynamics of gender, class, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation are played out within organizational cultures.

Introduction to basic theories and principles of social group work processes and the worker's role in applying theory to practice in social settings. Explores the differences and similarities of experience, needs and beliefs of diverse population groups within our society, and provides a theoretical foundation from which to develop differential assessment and intervention skills essential to cultivating sensitive practice. Patterns, dynamics and consequences of discrimination, economic deprivation and oppression are discussed with special emphasis on the impact of these on minorities, women, and gay and lesbian populations.

SOW 4233 Social Justice, Social Action, and Social Policies . . . . . 3(3,0)
Examination of social thought, social values, oppression, and theoretical foundations as influences on the development of social policies from the perspective of social and economic justice. Integrates the key elements of the profession of social work through the filter/lens of social and economic justice, including: history and philosophical foundations of social welfare, community organization and social action, cultural and group differences and oppression, economic systems, social policies, and the impact of these key areas on professional practice. Skills in problem-solving and critical thinking will be applied to the analysis of contemporary and proposed social policies, issues, and programs from the context of social and economic justice. American social policies will also be studied and compared with other social, political, and economic systems.

Designed to acquaint students with a definition and understanding of contemporary family forms and family functioning, both normative and in crisis, and introduces them to modalities for assisting troubled families. Emphasis is on the need for family intervention in substance abuse and addiction treatments. It is designed for students who anticipate working in human services, and it presupposes that either a basic helping methods course or appropriate experience has preceded it. Examines appropriate intervention strategies providing appropriate treatment and care of the elderly. Special attention to the needs of disadvantaged older persons will be explored within psychological, economic, political, and social contexts. Assists the student, both personally and as a helper to others, to approach the death event with: more knowledge, more sensitivity to its implications, and less dread and denial. Course examines historical, cultural, legal, religious, personal, interpersonal, and practical aspects of death and bereavement. Historical, legal, ethical, and social issues relating to drug abuse prevention and treatment. The family unit will serve as a basic focus for the area of prevention.
