Bachelor's degree programs in the Department of Health, Leisure, and Sports prepare students for positions in teaching, the health and fitness industry, leisure services, and graduate study. A State-approved teacher education certification program is available in physical education (K-8, 6-12). Teacher certification in driver education is also available in the department.

The Exercise Science Specialization is designed for the student interested in pursuing a career in the fitness industry and for graduate school. The Leisure Studies specialization is designed for the student interested in pursuing a career in a field such as municipal recreation, state and national parks, commercial recreation, travel and tourism, and other leisure services.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
In addition to general University requirements and General Studies requirements, students seeking the B.S. degree must meet the requirements listed below.

Candidates for admission to UWF's NCATE/DOE approved teacher education programs must meet admission requirements detailed under Admission to Teacher Education. In addition to the program requirements noted below, teacher education students must also complete requirements specified under Teacher Education.

Physical Education majors must include in the lower division requirements at least 9 sh of course work with international or diversity focus. Consult with your academic advisor for appropriate courses.

Physical Education majors who do not seek teacher certification may choose the non-certification major in Physical Education.

Sports Medicine majors must earn a grade of "C" or better in all major and major related courses.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Sports/Exercise Instructional Program
The Department of Health, Leisure, and Sports offers a variety of one hour sports and/or exercise programs as a service for University students and the community. The courses help students acquire knowledge and appreciation of various sports and exercise techniques. Students are allowed to progress at their own rate. The courses meet twice a week for one hour credit and are on a pass/fail basis. Tennis, swimming, racquetball, aerobics, strength training, volleyball, and advanced life saving are regular offerings. For successful completion, 80 percent attendance is required. Consult semester course listings and the department for more information.

Athletic Training Internship Program
The Department of Health, Leisure, and Sports offers a National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) internship program designed to prepare qualified athletic trainers for employment in high schools, colleges, professional sports programs, and other health care agencies. The program is available at the undergraduate and graduate levels for all majors. All candidates for NATA certification must meet basic core requirements which are (1) a bachelor's degree; (2) first aid and CPR, or EMT certification; (3) successful completion of coursework in basic and advanced athletic training, human anatomy, human physiology, mechanics of human motion, exercise physiology, and personal health; and (4) a clinical experience of 1500 clock hours. Upon completion of all requirements, a successful score on the NATA certification examination is required. Interested students should contact the chairperson of the Department of Health, Leisure, and Sports for specific advisement.

Driver Education Certification
Students with a bachelor's level teaching certification can become certified to teach driver education by completion of the following courses:
