College of Education
The mission of the College of Education and the professional education unit is to provide appropriate undergraduate and
graduate programs for initial teacher certification as well as the preparation of advanced level professional educators. The
Unit's programs are specifically designed to empower individuals to think, communicate, strategically plan, integrate
technology, and to develop their cognitive and affective human potential sufficiently to become exemplary educational leaders
in 21st Century schools. Within the context of the PEU mission, the goal of "empowerment" undergirds the Unit's structure,
curricular design, and conceptual framework(s). Faculty in the Unit believe that:
- Empowered educators are lifelong learners, problem solvers, and educational leaders. They are motivated to master
and apply emerging skills and competencies which will be critical for effective educational leadership during the next
century. They are prepared to seek out information, conduct appropriate research, interpret and communicate that
research, and apply that knowledge to solve problems and to improve the quality of public education.
- Empowered educators are adaptable, self-directed, and self-motivated individuals. They are goal oriented and capable
of adapting to and functioning in a rapidly changing and technologically complex global society.
- Empowered educators must instill within those with whom they work an appreciation for and understanding of the
critical role that "quality" public education plays in developing both democratic and core values within our Nation's
children and youth.
- Empowered educators have a high degree of commitment to the betterment of the lives of their students. Further, these
individuals are committed to developing and improving educational and human services support systems which focus on
providing quality educational experiences and support for all children, youth and adult learners.
- Empowered educators strive to be professionals in their respective fields and demonstrate through their actions a
proactive effort to improve their profession and to serve as exemplary educators. Empowered educators serve as role
models and provide leadership by example. Empowered educators assume the role of "educational" leaders and role
models within the public schools and in the community.
- Empowered educators appreciate the need for preparing children, youth and adult learners to adapt and function in a
rapidly changing and highly diverse global society. Empowered educators serve as role models in all areas of diversity
to those they teach, supervise, administer, or otherwise influence in their roles as educational leaders. Empowered
educators must conceptually understand that the 21st Century world will be more global in nature, more multicultural in
makeup, and overall more diverse. Empowered educators understand that educating children and youth to effectively
function in a rapidly changing and diverse environment must become a major objective of the educational system(s).
