The undergraduate curriculum of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics prepares the student for graduate study; teaching; service in science, government and industry; and supporting roles in the social, biological, and physical sciences. The program has two areas of specialization: general mathematics, and secondary teaching. Both specializations provide a sound foundation in mathematics. Students following the general mathematics specialization may select a program of study with emphasis on one of the following: pure mathematics, applied mathematics, or statistics. In addition to a strong preparation in core mathematics, students following the secondary education specialization obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for teaching mathematics at the secondary level. This program is popular with school districts that are seeking teachers possessing a mathematics degree with certification.
A training in mathematics together with appropriate course work in a relevant subdiscipline such as computer science, statistics, economics, or the natural sciences leads to many career opportunities in business, industry, government, and academics. Examples are statistician, actuary, operations researcher, environmental mathematician, and financial analyst.
The bachelor's degree program offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics permits students considerable flexibility in choosing electives outside the major. It is recommended that students seek the advice of faculty regarding career opportunities and choice of a suitable minor.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
In addition to general University requirements and General Studies requirements, students seeking the B.S. in Mathematics must meet the requirements listed below.

Candidates for admission to UWF's NCATE/DOE approved teacher education programs must meet admission requirements detailed under Admission to Teacher Education. In addition to the program requirements noted below, teacher education students must also complete requirements specified under Teacher Education.
