The Department of Educational Leadership offers NCATE accredited M.Ed. degrees in educational leadership with specializations in educational leadership (certification), curriculum and instructional development, and education and training management subspecialty.

The department also offers the NCATE accredited Ed.S. degree with specializations in educational leadership and curriculum and instruction.

MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAMS, M.Ed.

ADMISSION
In addition to general University minimum standards of admission to graduate studies, students are required to provide a letter of intent including the name, address, and phone number of three professional references. The completed application will be reviewed by the department Graduate Admissions Committee.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for a M.Ed. degree in educational leadership, a student must:

  1. Be admitted to the program;
  2. Submit an approved degree plan which includes 33-36 semester hours;
  3. Have at least 15 semester hours of all course work at the 6000 level (the remainder will be at the 5000 level except when specific waivers have been obtained);
  4. A maximum of 6 semester hours of graduate level directed study may be accepted;
  5. Complete degree requirements within five years from the date of admission; and
  6. Be recommended for graduation by the Department of Educational Leadership.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Those who seek approved degree program certification in educational leadership must:
  1. Complete all degree requirements of the approved program;
  2. Hold or be eligible for the Florida teaching certificate or its equivalent from another state;
  3. Have completed at least three years teaching experience in elementary and/or secondary school; and
  4. Be able to document successful completion of the Florida beginning teacher program or hold a continuing, professional services contract or tenure.
CERTIFICATION SPECIALIZATION
The educational leadership certification program, approved by the Florida Council on Educational Management, is designed for students who wish to prepare for administrative and supervisory positions such as principal, assistant principal, district supervisor, in-service director, curriculum developer, or dean in public and private elementary and secondary schools.

The program emphasizes the knowledge prescribed in the eight domains of the Florida Council on Educational Management leadership core and seeks to prepare students for the Florida Educational Leadership Exam (FELE). Students must select an area of emphasis with 6 semester hours in that emphasis. Areas of emphasis are: primary education, middle school education, secondary school education, and exceptional student education.

CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTIONAL DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIZATION
This program is designed primarily for such professionals as elementary, secondary, and higher education classroom teachers, training and instruction specialists, instructional designers and developers, and other professional educators involved in designing, developing, and implementing learning or instructional experiences for children, adolescents, or adults. Emphasis is on analyzing personal needs; improving instructional skills; managing the classroom; designing curricula and instructional packages; formulating and evaluating instructional strategies; and interpreting, applying, and conducting research appropriate to one's instructional role.

EDUCATION & TRAINING MANAGEMENT SUBSPECIALTY (ETMS)
A 36 semester hour program, this major is designed for military officers and others interested in working in training in the military, business, and industry. It is offered through an interinstitutional agreement with George Mason University, George Washington University, Memphis State University, Old Dominion University, San Diego State University, and the University of Rhode Island. Interested individuals should contact the Department of Educational Leadership or the educational officer at their base for the competency areas and designated courses offered through UWF. One of the following is required for graduation: comprehensive exam, action research, project, or thesis.

ETMS PROGRAM INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY EMPHASIS
Students from PreK-12, community colleges, business and industry, and the military interested in the application of instructional technology for education and training can select the instructional technology option within the ETMS program. The option emphasizes emerging technology applications such as web-based instruction, multimedia design, and distance learning with a strong focus on instructional systems design, planning, and change. Two focus areas, technology leadership and technology integration can be selected for individual student area of emphasis.

SPECIALIST DEGREE PROGRAMS, Ed.S.

This program is designed primarily for professionals who hold positions of leadership in education or who aspire to provide educational leadership. The purpose of the program is to develop and enhance the functional capability of educational leaders. The research component is practitioner-oriented with emphasis on the utilization of research findings for decision making.

The degree in curriculum and instruction is designed primarily for professionals who are involved in designing, developing, and implementing learning experiences for children, adolescents, or adults. Emphasis is upon analyzing personnel needs; improving instructional skills; designing curriculum and instructional strategies; and interpreting, applying, and conducting research appropriate to a particular instructional or learning mode.

ADMISSION
Applicants must meet the minimum standards for admission to graduate studies. Additional requirements are the following:

  1. Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  2. Meet any two of the following:
    1. GRE score of 1000,
    2. Master's degree GPA of at least 3.25,
    3. GPA of at least 3.0 on the last 60 semester hours of the bachelor's degree; and
  3. Letter of application to the program describing academic background and scholarly/research interest; educational objectives; and the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of three professional references.
The completed application will be reviewed by the Graduate Program Admissions Committee. Upon admission, the student will be assigned an advisor.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for an Ed.S. degree, a student must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be admitted to the program
  2. Submit an approved degree plan which includes at least 36 semester hours.
  3. At least 15 semester hours of all course work in the educational leadership program must be of the 7000 level; at least 9 semester hours of all course work in the curriculum and instruction specialist program must be of 7000 level. The remainder will be at the 5000-6000 level except when specific waivers have been obtained.
  4. Complete degree requirements within seven years from the date of admission.
  5. Be recommended for graduation by the departmental chairperson.
