Students and faculty "customize" courses to fit a full range of services that are available in the setting. Student must be able to draw correlation between the discipline and field study. Journal and reflective experience paper are required. With the agreement of the student's faculty sponsor, a minimum of 4-6 hours per week must be done at the field site per semester hour of credit.

Course and practicum provide a comprehensive knowledge base concerning instructional and behavior management. Areas of emphasis include structuring the classroom for success, planning for instruction, managing materials and equipment, and managing student and group behavior in the classroom. Students will be provided with opportunities to observe and participate in elementary school settings. Minimum of 35 contact hours, includes seminar, observing, collaborating with elementary education professional in the school contact, and individual project. Primary purpose is to promote reflective thinking for student empowerment. Through ongoing professional seminars and engagement in a variety of professional workshops on topics related to Elementary Education, students will develop the ability to self-evaluate and reflect on experience for personal and professional development. Students will also develop a portfolio. The purposes of the portfolio are: (1) to engage in professional self-awareness, evaluation, development and progress; (2) to encourage interaction with ideas, materials, and peers; (3) to articulate a personal philosophy of Early Childhood Education; (4) project goals and plan strategies; and, (5) to document the development as an empowered person and professional. Graded on satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis.

EDE 4221 Integrated Elementary Curriculum . . . . . 4(4,0)
Integrated approach to the pedagogical content knowledge requisite to effective teaching of elementary science, mathematics, language arts, reading, social studies, and technology. Designed to integrate the knowledge gained through lower division content-specific courses and prepare students for the methodological courses in the teacher education program. Emphasis will be placed on literacy, thematic issues, portfolios, integrated scientific, technological, and mathematics skills necessary for elementary teachers to be effective in the classroom. Prerequisite: Core Curriculum (or its equivalent). An introductory course in microcomputers (or its equivalent).

EDE 6911 Action Research: Elementary Education . . . . . 1-6(Variable)
Identifying a problem, reviewing the literature and submitting a proposal which describes the problem to be solved. Reviews related research and gives steps to be undertaken to alleviate the problem; conducting the action research with adequate control of the Variables; evaluating and reporting the results. Prerequisite: permission of the faculty member directing the research and the department chairperson.

EDE 6941 Practicum: Elementary Education . . . . . 1-6(Variable)
Implementation of a well-researched teaching approach not previously used by the candidate; maintenance of a log to indicate adaptations required and conclusions drawn about the impact of the new approach on pupils' achievement; a professionally written report stating the approach used, the goal of the practicum, a brief review of related literature, a summary of the practicum experiences and a statement of the conclusions reached. Prerequisite: permission of the faculty member supervising the practicum and the department chairperson.

EDE 6971 Thesis . . . . . 1-6(Variable)
Original contribution or comprehensive analysis of theory and practice in a specific area. Prerequisite: permission of the faculty member directing the thesis and department chairperson.
