A survey course designed to introduce non-majors to the capabilities and scope of application of modern computer systems. This is a basic computer literacy course introducing selected topics including: the evolution of computers, computer hardware and software, computer applications, databases, computer communications, information systems development, modern computer applications such as decision support and expert systems, and the social and ethical implications of computers. The course may not be taken for computer science credit by computer science majors.

Illustrates basic computer hardware and operating system principles of the typical personal computer systems. Descriptions and functions of each computer hardware component are presented. Introduces the student to the Internet, using the Internet itself as the main source of information. Tools, including World Wide Web browsers, and mail programs will be presented and used. At the end of the course the student should be able to recognize the extent, advantages as well as problems involving the Internet.
