    BACHELOR'S DEGREE PROGRAM
    Courses are designed to provide students with the analytical and bibliographical skills necessary to research and interpret the past. Emphasis is placed upon active participation in the creative process of historical inquiry.

    The department offers specializations in history, teacher certification, business or public service, pre-law, European studies and area studies. The business or public service specialization prepares students for careers in business (especially management) and with historical agencies, museums, or the media. Pre-law is offered in conjunction with the political science department and includes courses in legal research and writing.

    Students planning to go on to graduate school are encouraged to attain proficiency in foreign languages.

    PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
    In addition to general University requirements and General Studies requirements found in the 1996-97 Catalog, students seeking the B.A. in History must meet the requirements listed below. A minimum grade of "C" is required in all major courses.

    Candidates for admission to UWF's NCATE/DOE approved teacher education programs must meet admission requirements detailed under Admission to Teacher Education. In addition to the program requirements noted below, teacher education students must also complete requirements specified under Teacher Education.

    History/Education majors must include in the lower division requirements at least 9 sh of course work with international or diversity focus. Consult with your academic advisor for appropriate courses.

    BUSINESS OR PUBLIC SERVICE SPECIALIZATION
    A student in this program will minor (12-15 sh) in business, communication arts, computer science, or social work.

    EUROPEAN STUDIES SPECIALIZATION
    A major or minor in history with a specialization in European studies is designed to enhance student's knowledge of European societies, which is essential not only for the humanities and social sciences but also for science, technology, and business. In addition to completing HIS 3002, European studies majors must select 30 sh or European history courses in specific historical periods, topics, geographic regions, and general courses as well as 9 sh or approved courses outside the Department of History. A minimum of 12 sh of foreign language courses are required at the 1000-level or higher.

    PRE-LAW PROGRAM SPECIALIZATION
    Students are required to enroll in 30 sh of history including required courses in English constitutional history and HIS 3002 along with American constitutional law, legal research, and writing.

    MINORS
    European Studies Minor (15 sh)
    Students wishing to minor in European Studies must complete 15 sh in approved courses (9 sh in history, and 6 sh outside history).

    History Minor (15 sh)
    A minor in history consists of 15 sh or upper-level course work in a planned program which includes 6 sh in U.S. history, 6 sh in European and 3 sh in a history elective.


    As of the date of publication of this Catalog addendum, the above noted degree requirements have not been approved by the Faculty Senate. Review by the Faculty Senate is anticipated during the Fall Semester 1996.
