Describe how this faculty line will advance UWF's legislative and strategic priorities in the applicable categories:
-
Economic Development/Workforce Demand
The department of History is requesting a replacement tenure-track professor line in Historic Preservation and 19th-century United States. The Historic Preservation aspect will provide high-impact practices and fit with UWF's strategic emphasis on professional skills. Students with a Historic Preservation certificate have an additional means to be successful in the job market.
The 19th-century component is necessary to support both undergraduate and graduate programs. This line fills a gap between colonial history and more modern history courses and is essential to provide content material. In addition, once this person is familiar with UWF and the department, we envision him/her to become director of the Historic Preservation certificate and possibly the director of the Early American Studies Program.
-
Florida Board of Governors Areas of Strategic Emphasis
None that are identified by the Board of Governors though the department could argue that the department fits into the area of Global Competitiveness. Historic preservation provides applied skills that can be used broadly and fits within the university's emphasis on workforce skills.
-
Accreditation Requirements
none
-
Community/Visibility
The Department of History has a strong tradition of community engagement and the Historic Preservation line will expand those opportunities. High-impact practices such as internships and practicums are already in place with the department and if the Historic Preservation certificate is allowed to expand, such outreach activities will be made a part of the program.
The content area of 19th-century United States covers aspects of history that are of interest to the community at large as well as in many academic circles. This individual will be able to work with local or regional groups as well as have the capability of bringing in a more national audience.
-
Any additional information to further explain the request such as comments on evidence of quality, general education requirements, significant pressure points, Emerald Coast offerings, online courses, etc:
In fall 2014, the Department of History began a new and interdisciplinary program in Early American Studies, which articulates with English, Government and Anthropology. The program has already attracted local and national students and we foresee the trend continuing. The 19th-century content area is necessary to fulfill our obligations to this new program and the students enrolled.
As part of the BOG realignment of general education courses, one history course, AMH2020 was included. We foresee this individual helping to fill a gap in our faculty and be able to teach a section of the AMH2020 (America History from 1877 to the present) course. This course can be offered both online and/or face-to-face.
The Historic Preservation aspect is essential to the continued success of the Historic Preservation certificate. Several students in both History and Anthropology are enrolled currently and we foresee this certificate expanding in the near future. This line will be able to provide not only content but also high-impact practices for both undergraduate and graduate students.
-
If this request is for a tenure-earning position, explain why a tenure-earning position is needed:
In Fall 2014, the department began a new graduate program in Early American Studies. The faculty member in this position will, once he/she is familiar with UWF, take over directing the program. In addition, the applied knowledge of Historic Preservation is necessary to support the department's certificate in Historic Preservation as well as the specialization in Public History. To maintain growth and quality of these programs, the department needs someone in a tenure-earning position.
-
a. General Description of Workload Assignment:
Most faculty teach a 3/3 load that is a mix of lower-level, upper-level and graduate courses. In some semesters, faculty may teach one lower-level and two upper-level or they may teach one lower-level, one upper-level and one graduate course. In addition, faculty are expected to hold office hours and advise students, as well as supervise theses or research papers. Tenure-track faculty are also expected to be active in scholarly activities and service, as outlined in the department's by-laws.
b. Explain how the workload/courses are currently being covered by the department:
We will lose our current Historic Preservation/19th-century person at the end of the fall semester so the only semester that will require adjustment is spring 2015. To provide adequate graduate courses we will have an instructor teach American Architecture to fulfill obligations regarding the Historic Preservation Certificate as well as the Early American Studies Program. This person is an architect with a Historic Preservation M.A. so he can teach some courses but is not a permanent solution.
If necessary the Chair will drop her AMH2010 course and allow and adjunct to teach it and will teach a second upper-level course. Again, this is a short-term solution and not something permanent.

Please explain why any undergraduate degree specializations* with fewer then 15 majors have not been deleted:
All undergraduate specializations with fewer than 15 majors has been deleted. The Pre-Law specialization is being deleted in the current CIM/CCR cycle to allow greater focus at the undergraduate level. The only specialization in the department of History at the undergraduate level is the traditional history major.
-
Please explain why any graduate degree specializations* with fewer then 10 majors have not been deleted:
All graduate programs, except for the traditional track, with fewer than 10 students have been deleted. Historically, the public history program has been a popular draw for incoming graduate students. The department has renewed its efforts to recruit graduate students, which is apparent in the summer/fall 2014 data.
* Does not include non-degree specializations (indicated with a † above)
