Departmental growth capacity represents a department's ability to support more students by offering more courses or raising course enrollment. The growth capacity rank identifies the departments with the greatest need of more faculty lines to support its current student credit hour load. This ranking is determined by dividing the department's weighted fall/spring student credit hours by the number of regular line-item instructional faculty in the department at the start of that academic year. These numbers are displayed in the Student Credit Hours table and the # of FTE Faculty by Tenure Status table, respectively. Departments with lower rank values have less capacity for growth based on this calculation than those with higher rank values.

      Escambia and Santa Rosa counties have a growing demand for qualified music instructors. In recent years, 100% of our BME graduates have full-time employment as music teachers upon degree completion.

      In order to continue to align state university degree programs with the economic development and workforce needs of the state, the Florida Board of Governors has identified several Areas of Programmatic Strategic Emphasis. The Bachelor of Music Education is a targeted degree area due to the BME's role in the Critical Workforce area of Education. The role of choral director is critical to the delivery of key courses in the BME curriculum including choral ensembles, choral literature, choral methods and various music education courses including but not limited to Intro to Music Teaching, Elementary Music Methods, and Middle/Secondary Music Methods.

    • Accreditation Requirements

      With this replacement line, It is crucial that we hire a choral director with a terminal degree in choral conducting in order to meet the expectations of our accrediting organization, NASM.

    • Community/Visibility

      UWF Singers and Madrigals are an integral part of community engagement and visibility for the department of music and the university. The choirs perform at many high profile events throughout the year including: the State of the University Address, Commencement, and Festival on the Green. In addition, the choirs collaborate on a regular basis with various arts organizations in the community such as the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra. With the hiring of a choral conductor, the visibility of the department/university will increase from local to regional and national.

  3. If this request is for a tenure-earning position, explain why a tenure-earning position is needed:

    The choral conducting faculty position is tenure-earning because the position requires someone whose scholarly and creative work will enhance the notoriety of the department of music and the university. This faculty member will be an active member of the choral community both as a guest conductor and clinician. In addition, they will be an active member of ACDA and contribute scholarly articles on choral conducting, choral literature etc. This faculty member will help to build a regional and national reputation for the UWF Singers through competitions, clinics and performances. This faculty member's notoriety in the discipline will serve as a recruitment tool for the music major. This faculty member will serve as a mentor to students in the discipline and a role model for students who seek a career as a choral conductors and music educators.

  4. a. General Description of Workload Assignment:

    The role of choral director is critical to the delivery of key courses in the music curriculum including choral ensembles, choral literature, choral methods and various music education courses including but not limited to Intro to Music Teaching, Elementary Music Methods, and Middle/Secondary Music Methods. Ideally we would like to hire someone who is capable of teaching applied voice as well.

    Currently, the choirs are being conducted by a faculty member with a masters degree in collaborative piano. The current arrangement was temporary fix that has yet to be corrected since Dr. Kyle Marrero was promoted to Vice President and gave up his choral conducting responsibilities in 2010.
