Welcome to the data archives for my recent National Science Foundation/Office of Polar Programs grant entitled "Interactive Effects of UV and Vertical Mixing on Phytoplankton and Bacterial Productivity of Ross Sea Phaeocystis Bloom" (OPP0127022). Co-Principal investigators for this project were Patrick Neale of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and Anne Gargett of Old Dominion University.
The project was defined by five oceanographic research cruises aboard the RVIB NATHANIEL B PALMER. Below is a brief description of each cruise and links to the available data from those cruises. Additional information for these cruise is available through the Global Change Master Directory.
I. BRIDE OF TABASCO NBP02-05. The horror show sequel to our 2000 cruise called "Translatitudinal Assessment of Biological Acclimation to Solar Conditions in the Ocean (TABASCO): A ship of opportunity cruise conducted in October of 2002 as the NBP carried hazardous wastes from the Antarctic peninsula research projects back to the United States for disposal. We boarded the ship in Punta Arenas, Chile but didn't start to collect samples until after one final port call in Valapariso, Chile and moved into international waters. The ship was headed toward San Diego, CA and stopped for approximately one hour each morning at sunrise to allow us to collect water samples via CTD hydrocasts. Please note that these cruises are in no way affiliated with the makers of a certain popular pepper sauce.

II. POTATOE NBP03-04. (Production Observations Through Another Translatitudinal Oceanic Expedition): Another "ship of opportunity" cruise wherein the NBP was transitting from the Arctic back to New Zealand before continuing on its regular southern ocean work. We boarded the ship in Barrow, AK and made port calls in Dutch Harbor, AK and Honolulu, HI. Samples were collected between late August to Early November, 2003. Departure Barrow, AK and termination at Lyttleton, NZ.

III. MIXURS NBP03-05. (MIXing and Ultraviolet radiation in the Ross Sea): This was to be our first cruise to the Ross Sea to study UV and Mixing interactions. We never made it. At approximately 68 degrees south, the crank shaft on both Starboard engines bent and we had to limp home on one screw. It did turn out to be useful as it allowed us to test drive some of our early sampling ideas before we turned around. October - November 2003. It departed and returned to Lyttleton, NZ.

IV. GRINCHES NBP04-09. (The exact acronym for this cruise now escapes us, although since the cruise occurred over Christmas, GRINCH was an obvious choice... I believe that owing to the participation of Ron Kiene and Dave Kieber's project looking at DMS/DMSP dynamics, we called it Going to the Ross sea to INvestigate Carbon and How Ecosystems Smell.... but I think after the ill-fated cruise the year before it may also have stood for Getting to the Ross sea INtact would be a Nice CHange...): This was the "summer" cruise to the Ross Sea polynya during bloom and post bloom conditions. December 2004 - January 2005. It departed Lyttleton, NZ and ended at McMurdo Station, Antarctica.

V. RE-MIXURS NBP05-08. (Repeat Effort -MIXing and Ultraviolet radiation in the Ross Sea):This was our final cruise to the Ross Sea and was the replacement cruise for the aborted MIXURS cruise of October/November 2003. It departed and returned to Lyttleton, NZ. It was by many accounts, very successful except that our objective of working in the polynya was thwarted until the last 5 sampling days as the Southern Ross Sea remained ice covered until then... and of course our objective of sampling during ozone depletion was thwarted as the ozone hole closed up before we arrived at our sampling location.
